Monday - We woke up at seven to shower and do last minute packing. After a delicious breakfast with the folks my parents drove us to Semarang airport. After getting hit on by the security guards ("Take me to America with you"), we boarded the short flight to Jakarta. We had a very short layover in Jakarta, but we managed to make time for a coffee break. To our surprise we had been bumped up to first class for a flight to Singapore. It was a little piece of heaven in the skies. We wanted our flight to last longer (which is saying a lot considering all the traveling we've been doing). We had a longer layover in Singapore so we relaxed in a cafe while we waited for the check-in counter to open.
Our flight was slightly late in setting off. What ensued for the next three and a half hours was all sorts of awful. Needless to say if there had been parachutes available, Shari and I would be currently floating in the Bay of Bengal in order to escape. On a humorous note and to prove my point, near the end of the flight a flight attendant got on the intercom and announced: "We will be spraying an aerosol. Don't worry it is safe for human beings." Needless to say that caused us increased anxiety not less. They then proceeded to spray a substance that smelled of almonds (my first thought was cyanide) and bug spray (always healthy). Thankfully we're still alive.
Immigration was a free for all, welcome to India. Before that though we had to be checked for swine flu (which has been the case in every airport) and as Shari so aptly put it, "I hated swine flu before and now I loathe it." We finally made it through the multiple checkpoints to get our luggage. Varsha and her brother met us in the arrival area and drove us to the apartment (we only saw one cow in the road). We passed out soon upon our arrival.
